Michigan commission directs utilities to file State Reliability Mechanism applications

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) recently rescheduled proceedings for Consumers Energy and DTE Electric Company associated with the establishment of a State Reliability Mechanism (SRM).

An SRM is intended to ensure the sufficiency of the state’s electric resources. The commission’s order also directs MPSC staff to organize a technical conference on issue related to the creation of an SRM.

MPSC has directed both Consumers Energy and DTE Electric to file SRM applications by April 11. MPSC will read the record in these cases, avoiding the need for the administrative law judge to prepare a proposal for decision, in order to expedite the proceedings.

MPSC will address the need for SRM proceedings for Upper Michigan Energy Resources Corporation, Upper Peninsula Power Company and Cloverland Electric Cooperative at a future date.

On Feb. 28, MPSC temporarily suspended the schedules for the SRM proceedings for Consumers Energy and DTE Electric and set up a comment period on the scope and the schedules for the proceedings dealing with the fulfillment of certain sections of Public Act 341 of 2016.
