The latest climate report released by the Ameren Corporation lent insight into both its commitments and progress the company has made in recent years toward net-zero carbon emissions as of 2045 and the addition of 5,400 MW of renewable energy by 2040.

With the new 2045 goal, the St. Louis-based company advanced its timescale for net-zero emissions by five years, down from 2050. According to the new details, its milestones now include a 60 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and an 85 percent reduction by 2040, all compared to 2005 levels. At the same time, it pledged to add 2,400 MW of renewable generation by 2030, on the path to that 5,400 MW total in 2040.

“Climate change is a critical issue for our customers, our communities, our nation, and our planet, and we are committed to doing our part,” Marty Lyons, president and CEO of Ameren Corporation, said. “That’s why we have taken an even more aggressive approach to address climate impacts. In 2022 we accelerated our goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by five years, from 2050 to 2045 – all while safeguarding energy affordability, reliability, and resiliency for our customers.”

Coinciding with the massive renewable energy additions, Ameren will also cut three of its four remaining coal-fired energy centers by 2030 before ultimately retiring the last by 2042. Other important figures from the report include a 95 percent reduction target for water withdrawal by 2045, as well as major increases in electric vehicle-related infrastructure investments. Doubling down on those vehicles, the company will electrify at least 35 percent of its fleet by the decade’s end.
