Targa Badlands proposes conversion of North Dakota crude oil gathering pipeline

Targa Badlands, LLC recently submitted a proposal to The North Dakota Public Service Commission (PSC) to convert their existing crude oil gathering pipeline in McKenzie County, North Dakota into a transmission line.

The pipeline runs for approximately 54 miles between Johnsons Corner and Alexander, North Dakota and measures eight inches in diameter. Targa is also seeking to include two 20,000-barrel capacity storage tanks at Johnsons Corner and the 30,000-barrel capacity storage tank at its facilities in Alexander to store crude
oil before it is transported through the pipeline. Targa also wants the ability to flow oil in either direction through the pipeline, which requires converting it into a transmission line.

The proposed project would allow the pipeline to deliver crude oil from other parts of Targa’s gathering systems and production sites throughout Dunn and McKenzie Counties to the Enbridge terminal near Alexander.

The project will increase the pipeline’s capacity by approximately 17,500 barrels a day to 50,000 daily. The project is expected to cost approximately $85 million.

The PSC will hold a public hearing on the proposal on March 27 in Watford City. Public comment presented at the meeting will become part of PSC’s official record and may be used in the commission’s decision-making process.
