Evergy, Inc., which supplies energy to customers in Kansas and Missouri, this week issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) on up to 1,240 MW of resources to enter service by 2026, all interconnected with the Southwest Power Pool (SPP).

While preference will be given to projects located in Evergy’s service area states, other Midwest projects of at least 50 MW or larger will be considered. All sources are welcome to the bidding, so long as proposals are in by Feb. 28, 2023. Regardless of what Evergy chooses, any proposals would also be subject to regulatory approvals, as normal.

These additional resources will benefit Evergy’s longer-term plan to add more than 3,500 MW of renewable energy over the source of the decade. At the same time, the company intends to retire more than 1,900 MW of coal-based fossil generation as it works to cut carbon emissions by 70 percent – relative to 2005 levels – by 2030. After that, it has a net-zero carbon emissions goal for 2045.

This RFP is Evergy’s first issued since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The company stated that it will use any savings brought by its established federal incentives to benefit customers.
