Laredo wraps up project with AEP Texas to convert streetlights to LED lighting

The City of Laredo has completed a project with AEP Texas to convert the city’s existing streetlights to LED lighting.

The two-year project concludes with approximately 12,000 LED streetlights installed throughout the city. Laredo is the first city within the AEP Texas service territory that has completed the LED lighting conversion process.

“AEP Texas applauds the City of Laredo for its commitment to energy efficiency,” said AEP Texas External Affairs Manager Tony Arce, Jr. “We look forward to continuing our efforts to jointly identify additional energy efficiency projects that can be implemented and save energy.”

LED lighting typically uses about 50 percent less energy than traditional bulbs and lasts approximately four times longer.

“The conversion illustrates the power of collaboration,” Assistant City Manager Riazul Mia said. “I commend AEP Texas for helping promote the conversion to higher efficiency energy efficient street lighting.”

Arce noted that there are still a few individual locations where the conversion is pending due to new developments and final surveys. He said that the conversion of streetlights at these locations will be addressed during the next phase of the overall large-scale lighting project.

The next phase, he noted, will focus on conversion to LED lighting in Laredo’s city parks and other city-owned buildings.
