AVANGRID undertakes two new solar farms in Texas, Ohio

Construction recently began on two new solar projects for AVANGRID, representing 523.5 MW of potential clean energy generation for Texas and Ohio.

These sites will add to the company’s overall 8.6 GW renewable energy portfolio and join more than 25 GW of renewable capacity – including solar, onshore and offshore wind, and battery energy storage – currently under development.

“With solar projects like True North and Powell Creek, we are strengthening our mission of helping the U.S. meet its ambitious clean energy goals,” Pedro Azagra, CEO of AVANGRID, said. “These solar farms, and many more throughout the U.S., will also boost local economies by creating quality jobs while providing clean, affordable, and renewable energy for business and communities.”

True North is the Texas site and represents AVANGRID’s first solar foray into the state. It will account for 321 MW of the new capacity and is expected to reach commercial operation by early 2025. It’s expected to provide more than $40 million in property taxes over 25 years.

The other site was called Powell Creek – a 202.5 MW solar farm in Ohio’s Putnam County. While no expected completion date was given, AVANGRID added that it should provide additional local revenue to neighboring communities of more than $38 million over the project’s lifespan.
