After it began commercial operation, ALLETE Clean Energy’s Red Barn wind project was sold this week, shifting the 91.6 MW turbine-driven power source to Wisconsin Public Service Corp. (WPS) and Madison Gas and Electric Co. (MGE).

This was always the plan for ALLETE Clean Energy, a subsidiary of ALLETE, Inc. After it acquired Red Barn two years ago, it represented the company’s first foray into Wisconsin, but it was being developed specifically for sale to the two utilities to aid their carbon-reduction goals. It consists of 28 turbines spread across 8,900 acres in Wisconsin’s Grant County.

“Red Barn is a great example of how ALLETE Clean Energy is delivering cost-effective clean-energy solutions for a more sustainable grid,” said Nicole Johnson, ALLETE Clean Energy president and ALLETE vice president. “We continue to build on our track record for creating smart solutions for customers while expanding our capabilities to meet their needs and driving growth.”

The company is already eying other clean-energy sector growth it could capitalize on. Currently, it owns, operates, is building, or has provided build-transfer projects offering more than 1,500 MW of nameplate wind capacity in Wisconsin and seven other states.
