More than 20 solar and energy storage projects for Dominion Energy Virginia have been approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), the company said Friday.
The projects are expected to generate more than 800 MW of carbon-free electricity, the company said, enough to power about 200,000 homes at peak output. Additionally, the company said the projects are anticipated to deliver more than $250 million in fuel savings during their first 10 years in operation.
“This is another big step forward in delivering reliable, affordable, and cleaner energy to our customers,” said Ed Baine, president of Dominion Energy Virginia. “These projects will bring jobs and economic opportunity to our communities, and they will deliver fuel savings for our customers. That’s a win-win for Virginia.”
The projects include nine solar projects and one energy storage project that will be owned and operated by Dominion Energy Virginia, as well as 13 solar and energy storage projects owned by independent developers and approved through power purchase agreements.
Two of the projects – Kings Creek Solar and Ivy Landfill Solar – are slate for land previously developed by Dominion. Ivy Landfill Solar will be the company’s first solar project developed on a former landfill.
The company anticipates the investment will generate more than $920 million in economic benefit across the state. The company said the investment will add an estimated $0.38 to the average residential bill. Even with the added costs, the company’s rates are below the national average, as well as the average for the mid-Atlantic region and east coast.
Construction on the renewable projects is expected to finish up by 2025.
