ComEd has delivered $100M in rebates to Illinois customers for rooftop solar installations

Increasing interest in rooftop solar options have led to significant rebates for ComEd customers, with the company noting more than $100 million in rebates have been delivered as a result of participation in its distributed generation rebate program.

According to the energy company’s estimates, solar power on its grid will likely grow from the nearly 650 MWs deployed currently to around 3,300 MW by 2030. Last year alone, ComEd received more than 19,000 applications – a 40 percent increase over 2021 – from residential, commercial, and industrial customers interested in connecting solar panels and other distributed energy resources to the grid.

One of the recent beneficiaries was St. Paul Lutheran Church and School in the Norwood Park neighborhood, which deployed 226 solar panels to generate approximately 91.9 kW of clean energy.

“We applaud St. Paul Lutheran for taking the initiative to support a cleaner energy future by installing rooftop solar panels at their school,” said Scott Vogt, vice president of strategy and energy policy at ComEd. “The DG rebate program is one example of the many ways ComEd continues to support the growth of solar in our service territory.”

Overall, the program works by reducing upfront costs of solar system installations, encouraging organizations like St. Paul, individuals, and more to spur renewable energy development in Illinois. Owners and operators of distributed energy generating systems are eligible for rebates of either $250 or $300 per kW of generating capacity, depending on their customer rate class. Rebates also benefit energy storage systems associated with eligible DG facilities, so long as a smart inverter is installed.
