A groundbreaking ceremony this week kicked off work on a new Entergy Texas facility in Orange County that could bring $1.8 billion in economic activity to the area and the production of 1,215 MW of electricity annually: the Orange County Advanced Power Station.

Expected to enter service by 2026, the facility should be able to power up to 230,000 homes at full capacity. It will be located next to Entergy Texas’ existing Sabine Power Plant and feature a unique ability: hydrogen co-firing. That, Entergy hopes, will assure its long-term viability and help provide a modern, more efficient generation to replace end-of-life legacy gas generation.

“This groundbreaking marks the start of an exciting opportunity to serve the growing demand across Southeast Texas,” Eliecer Viamontes, president and CEO of Entergy Texas, said. “By investing in modern and fuel-efficient technology, we can meet the needs of our customers today while laying the foundation for future growth across our region.”

Hydrogen can be used alongside natural gas to produce energy when needed and reduce emissions, as the gas is less carbon-intensive.

Work on the facility will be undertaken by Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc., Sargent & Lundy, and The Industrial Company. Together, they will handle engineering, procurement, and construction alike.
