ComEd finishes three community solar projects in Streator, Ill.

ComEd and Summit Ridge Energy recently completed three community solar projects in Streator, Ill.

ComEd, a subsidiary of Exelon Corp., has now done 80 community solar projects in their northern Illinois service region. ComEd serves more than 4 million customers across northern Illinois.

“ComEd and Summit Ridge Energy are proud to play a leading role in the growth of community solar in Illinois,” said Scott Vogt, vice president of strategy and energy policy at ComEd. “These three new projects, and reaching the 80th project milestone, demonstrate our commitment to increasing equitable access to clean energy, and we applaud Summit Ridge for its leadership.”

The three projects, which occupy about 38 acres along North 14th Road in Streator, generate approximately six megawatts of clean energy to provide energy for 1,000 and 1,200 average homes. They include more than 16,700 total solar panels.

“We are pleased to be playing a significant role in making the ComEd region one of the nation’s fastest-growing markets for community solar,” Mark Raeder, principal of Summit Ridge Energy, said. “We expect to have completed over 50 community solar projects in northern Illinois by the end of this year, helping ComEd bring reliable, clean energy to its customers.”

Summit Ridge Energy is Illinois’s largest commercial solar developer, providing more than 250 megawatts across the state.

Community solar allows ComEd customers to participate in the benefits of clean solar energy without installing their solar panels. Participants subscribe to a solar energy “farm” of solar panels owned by an independent developer and earn credits on their monthly ComEd bills for their portion of the energy produced by the project.
