The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC) this week approved the Clean Energy Implementation Plan (CEIP) proposed by Puget Sound Energy (PSE), setting the company’s course shift to more than 60 percent clean electricity by 2025.

Beyond that, the plan – filed in December 2021 – also laid out a roadmap for PSE to provide its power without carbon emissions entirely by 2045. Along the way, it will deploy utility-scale renewables, energy efficiency programs and new customer-focused programs as well. Currently, the company claimed to be on track to meet its 2025 goal of 63 percent clean electricity.

“Gaining UTC approval of our Clean Energy Implementation Plan is a major milestone in our clean energy transition,” Mary Kipp, PSE president and CEO, said. “This plan identifies our course of action for clean electricity programs and investments through 2025, aligning with policies established by Washington’s Clean Energy Transformation Act (CETA).”

Planning for the future, the UTC’s order did insist PSE follow additional considerations and requirements for future plans. Ostensibly, these should be addressed in the company’s 2023 Biennial CEIP Update.

Also going forward, PSE will launch a set of demand response programs this year, meant to improve efficiency and reduce energy grid demand during peak hours.
