Duke Energy Indiana announced Monday it had signed an agreement with Shelby County-based Ranger Power for up to 199 megawatts of solar power.

The agreement will provide the energy company with enough solar power to serve an estimated 35,000 homes, the company said. The agreement is subject to approval by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. The 20-year power purchase agreement will provide power from Ranger’s Speedway Solar facility, pending approval.

“The emission-free solar power that this new facility generates will help us continue to diversify our generation resources and make meaningful progress toward a cleaner energy future,” Stan Pinegar, president of Duke Energy Indiana, said.

The 1,700-acre Speedway facility south of Gwynneville, Ind., underwent construction in March, and is expected to be in operation by September 2025.

“We are thrilled to bring this significant investment in clean energy to Shelby County and the state of Indiana,” Adam Cohen, CEO of Ranger Power, said. “Speedway Solar will deliver significant economic and environmental benefits for decades to come – powering businesses and homes in Indiana.”

The agreement is part of Duke’s most recent Indiana Integrated Resource Plan to add 2,218 megawatts of solar power, 450 megawatts of solar with energy storage and 6,200 megawatts of wind energy. The renewable energy investment are in addition to the company’s Crane solar plant in southern Indiana, the expansion of the Markland hydroelectric plant and other solar and wind power purchases, the company said.
