With the electric vehicle market and associated charging infrastructure showing no signs of slowing down, the Argonne National Laboratory announced this week that it had acquired J.D. Power’s newest data sets, which it will use to analyze EV adoption efforts and charging behavior.

Thanks to a contract between the two organizations, Argonne researchers will be able to tap the J.D. Power EV Index data sets for a greater understanding of customers’ actual experiences with EV charging infrastructure and their interest in EVs at large. This could provide insights into preferences, usage patterns and hurdles faced by the consumer.

“Combined with Argonne’s technical data and analysis, J.D. Power’s data on EV-related consumer behavior will help Argonne and DOE advance the understanding of the current EV user and charging landscape,” Claus Daniel, Argonne’s associate lab director for advanced energy technologies, said. “This understanding will support decision-making that moves the nation closer to its clean transportation and climate goals.”

Analyses on the subject will ultimately be meant for researchers and policymakers, first and foremost. It will help inform accessibility pushes and, Argonne hopes, more reliable charging networks, to spread the EV reach further.

Argonne has been and remains a key piece of the U.S. Department of Energy’s push to understand the trends and barriers surrounding vehicle electrification, as well as the supply chains that make it possible. The lab supplies data to the DOE on topics such as EV manufacturing, carbon emissions cuts and reductions in gas consumption, among other figures related to the EV transition.
