A new sustainability report released by major United States energy supplier Constellation last week highlighted its clean energy progress and investments, as well as the offerings its bringing to customers and underserved communities.

To date, the company is the largest producer of carbon-free energy in the United States, even though 2023 marked its first full year as a standalone Fortune 200 company. Constellation’s fleet of energy assets accounted for more than 10 percent of the nation’s clean energy in 2022, and 90 percent of all energy it produced came from carbon-free sources. This puts it leaps ahead of most, and still on track for its 10 percent carbon-free generation by 2040 goal.

Among the assets making this possible, Constellation launched the first nuclear-powered electrolyzer in the United States, combining clean hydrogen with nuclear energy as an emissions reduction measure.

“Since day one, we’ve been focused on accelerating the transition to a carbon-free future and uplifting the communities we serve, and this report reflects our progress,” said Joe Dominguez, president and CEO of Constellation. “This year again demonstrated that America needs energy that is both clean and available when and where customers across the country need it. That’s why we are innovating products that will help our customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions, advocating for policies that will help our nation advance reliable, carbon-free energy, and working to ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are shared by all.”

In total, the company provided 178 terawatt hours of clean electricity in 2022 – enough to power the equivalent of 15 million homes. It also partnered with Microsoft to create and deploy an hourly carbon-free energy matching product, providing proof of concept for hourly carbon-free energy agreements that other corporate purchasers or policymakers could consider.

On top of this, Constellation launched the Powering Change workforce development program with an initial $1 million in funding support for nonprofits, to help break down employment barriers for the underserved. For those groups, it also signed a diversity pledge with North America’s Building Trades to increase access and advancement opportunities.
