Arizona Public Service breaks own peak demand record seven days running

As Arizona endures record heat, Arizona Public Service (APS) keeps setting records, with the most recent being an 8,193 MW peak energy use on July 20, 2023.

It was the latest in a string of record breaking moments for the company – the third time that week, and part of the seven highest peak days in the company’s history. The energy system has remained largely stable during all this, despite a month where the majority of days have reached temperatures in excess of 110 degrees, and air conditioner use has been less about comfort than basic survival

The previous peak demand period had been 7,660 MW, set back in July 30, 2020.

“Despite historic levels of energy usage, APS and its customers experienced no issues related to power supply; and that does not happen by accident,” Ted Geisler, APS president, said. “It takes years of planning, maintaining a diverse energy mix, investing in and strengthening the electric system, and most importantly teams of people who are dedicated to keeping the lights on for customers when they need us most. Arizona summers can be brutal, and APS is here to serve and ready to respond every day whether we’re faced with heat, monsoon storms, wildfires or all of the above.”

While the heat has not yet brushed up against APS’ max power supply, current forecasts put monsoon season firmly on the radar ahead. The company warned customers last week of the potential for high winds and lightning to knock out power, but added that its crews are prepared to restore power in that eventuality.
