Avangrid begins work on solar farm for Meta in Texas

Sustainable energy company Avangrid has begun construction on True North, a 240 MWac (321 MWdc) solar farm in Falls County, Texas.

The solar farm will be used to supply clean, renewable energy to power Meta’s operations in the region. True North is Avangrid’s first solar farm in Texas. It is expected to reach commercial operations by early 2025.

“We are very excited to announce this milestone, which reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing the clean energy transition and building a more sustainable future for all,” Pedro Azagra, Avangrid CEO, said. “With projects like True North, we continue our mission of helping the country meet its ambitious energy goals, while also creating quality jobs and strengthening our local economies”.

Meta’s global operations have been supported by 100 percent renewable energy since 2020. The True North project will support Meta’s new data center, which will be built in neighboring Temple, Texas. This will be their second data center facility in Texas.

During its construction and operation, True North will create over 200 local jobs. Also, it is expected to pay over $40 million in property taxes over 25 years. Meta already operates more than 1,250 MW of onshore wind facilities.

Avangrid is the third largest renewable energy operator in the United States, with more than 8.6 GW of installed renewable capacity.
