A new electric vehicle incentive program launched this week as part of a joint effort between Entergy New Orleans and Sagewell, Inc., floating monthly credits for 350 customers who charge their vehicles in off-peak hours.

The Bring Your Own Charger program encourages EV owners to program and charge their vehicles during preset hours, which Sagewell’s software algorithms will confirm in conjunction with advanced meter data. Those enrolled will gain credits of $7 per month, paid quarterly – meaning a typical EV driver could earn up to one month of free driving per year.

For Entergy, it is an effort to reduce overall energy demand, ease EVs into the network and tap into overnight capacity to reduce the squeeze on the grid during the hotter, more eventful daylight hours. Sagewell noted that this has worked in the past, as participants in other communities have charged off-peak at least 90 percent of the time.

“Entergy New Orleans continues to embrace new ways to support electric vehicle drivers and the growing number of EV registrations in New Orleans,” Ross Thevenot, Entergy New Orleans Demand Side Management Senior Project Manager, said. “As the proliferation of EVs continues, programs like this will help benefit all customers and help minimize impacts to the grid.”

Enrollments are first come, first serve, and applicants must be existing residential customers of Entergy New Orleans. Further, they must use a Level 2 charger at home
