Xcel Energy turned in two proposed routes for its approximately 175-mile long Minnesota Energy Connection transmission line to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission and Minnesota Department of Commerce this week.

Either route would allow Xcel to connect low-cost wind and solar energy in southwest Minnesota, running from Lyon County to its Sherco plant. It would consist of a double-circuit, 345 kV line that will let up to 4,000 MW of renewable energy replace electricity generated at the Sherco plant once it retires, and help the company to meet Minnesota’s 2040 clean energy standards.

“Xcel Energy was the first major power company in the nation to set a vision for delivering 100% carbon-free electricity to its customers,” Chris Clark, president of Xcel Energy–Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, said. “Expanding our transmission network allows us to accelerate our progress toward this vision by maximizing our use of the renewable energy we already generate and clearing the way to add new generation to the grid.”

The review process typically takes anywhere from one year to 15 months. In that time, customers and other stakeholders will be able to give input. Xcel noted that quick approvals could allow construction to begin in late 2025 and complete by late 2027.
