In support of regional growth, ComEd, local partners and biotherapeutics company CSL announced completion of work on a new electrical substation for CSL Behring’s Kankakee County, Illinois, manufacturing center.

CSL Behring is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its manufacturing headquarters in Kankakee this year, a location that manufactures medicines and undertakes research. At 1.8 million square feet and a sprawling 140 acre campus, it’s a major facility, now backed by a 5.6 acre substation. That substation will aid the site’s operations while adding to power reliability in the area.

“In addition to offering the best reliability in the nation, ComEd is proud to deliver the infrastructure upgrades to help CSL meet growing power needs as it builds on 70 years of success in Kankakee County,” Terence Donnelly, president and COO of ComEd, said. “In addition to supporting their power needs, this substation plays a key role in the continued economic growth of the region. ComEd is proud to continue to invest in the vital infrastructure needed to help businesses meet their goals for a cleaner and more resilient future.”

When working on the substation, ComEd and its contractors added numerous transmission system improvements to the mix, such as new transformers and circuit breakers. CSL itself also invested $35 million into below-ground site improvements and roadway enhancements, along with surrounding infrastructure upgrades to support the new bulk power substation.

“The importance of this project provides CSL Behring with a reliable power source so we can continue manufacturing our lifesaving products to our patients without any disruptions,” Abner Garcia-Delgado, CSL Behring site head, said. “We are impressed with the completion of the substation, the professionalism and the collaboration with ComEd who is providing clean, affordable, and reliable power service to CSL Behring. This electrical substation is part of Kankakee’s reliability and sustainability strategy.”
