With the addition of four more solar plants this month, Tampa Electric declared that 14 percent of its energy can now come from the sun, a major milestone scheduled to go even further over the coming years.

For now, Tampa Electric can produce 1.25 GW of electricity from solar sources – the equivalent of powering more than 200,000 homes. More construction is slated to begin next year, followed by an additional round by the end of 2026, to push solar’s total share of Tampa Electric’s portfolio to 17 percent, or more than 1.6 GW.

“Thanks to our strategic investment in solar power, Tampa Electric customers have saved about $200 million in fuel costs in the past five years,” Archie Collins, president and CEO of Tampa Electric, said. “We know how important these savings are for customers, and in coming years, we expect to generate even more power from the sun.”

That $200 million figure is based on the years since 2017. The company added that it has saved more than 4.3 billion gallons of water by repurposing former agricultural land for solar investments, by the end of its 2026 rollouts, will be cutting CO2 emissions by more than 2.35 million tons each year.
