The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) elected Calvin G. Butler, president and CEO of Exelon, to vice chair of its board.

Butler will serve alongside EEI Chair Pedro Pizarro, president and CEO of Edison International, and EEI Vice Chair Maria Pope, president and CEO of Portland General Electric.

“On behalf of EEI and our member companies, we are excited to have Calvin Butler assume this leadership position on EEI’s board,” EEI President and CEO Dan Brouillette said. “Calvin is an exceptional leader and a key player in our industry’s efforts to deliver resilient clean energy at affordable rates to the customers and communities we proudly serve. He has extensive operational expertise and is steadfast in his work to ensure we maintain a world-class workforce for our industry. We are extremely fortunate to have him serve in this role on the EEI leadership team.”

Butler is president and CEO of Exelon, the parent company of Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO, and Pepco. These companies serve approximately 10 million electric and natural gas customers in New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.

“Our industry is making incredible investments in the energy grid,” Butler said. “We are committed to ensuring an equitable energy transformation, meeting the evolving needs of our customers, and building the infrastructure needed to deliver clean energy and to make the grid more resilient. It is an exciting time, and EEI and America’s investor-owned electric companies are at the forefront to continue leading the way to an affordable and equitable clean energy future.”

Before becoming CEO at Exelon, Butler served as president and chief operating officer (COO) of the company. He also served as the CEO of Exelon Utilities and the CEO of BGE before that. Prior to those roles, Butler was BGE’s senior vice president for regulatory and external affairs.

Prior to joining Exelon in 2008, held leadership roles at supply chain solutions company R.R. Donnelley and also worked for Central Illinois Light Company.

Butler is on the board of the Institute of International Education and on the Board of Governors for Argonne National Laboratory.

Butler earned a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University and a Juris Doctor degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. He also received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Morgan State University in 2014.
