Plans are underway for AEP Ohio to build two new electric transmission lines in the state’s Delaware and Licking counties, and this week the company identified proposed routes for the 345-kv lines.

The move followed AEP Ohio notifying PJM Interconnection – the regional grid operator – that additional lines would be needed to meet the demands of customers. Central Ohio has undergone significant growth in power demand from its large energy users in recent years. As a result, AEP Ohio intends to seek approval from the Ohio Power Siting Board to construct the first of these lines next year. Similar efforts will then follow for the second.

Those lines will connect Vassell Substation of Sunbury, Delaware County, to two new substations near Green Chapel Road in New Albany, Licking County. If all goes well, the first transmission line project should begin in summer 2024 and finish in spring 2026, while work on the second would follow in spring 2026 and finish sometime in the spring of 2027.

AEP Ohio noted that it would reach out to landowners of properties along the final line route and the various study segments, after final alignments are made.
