AES Indiana buys up 106 MW Hoosier Wind project from EDF Renewables North America

In a sale approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), AES Indiana acquired the Benton County, Indiana-based Hoosier Wind Project recently.

This will allow full incorporation of 106 MW of renewable energy into AES Indiana’s portfolio, from a known element. Hoosier has been in operation since 2009, running with a 20-year power purchase agreement with EDF Renewables North America. As a result of the acquisition, the company told its customers that they will see long-term savings, and benefit from the project’s inherent lower fuel and maintenance costs. The average customer should see small monthly savings of approximately $0.07.

“This strategic acquisition advances our investments in renewables and supports our commitment to provide customers with reliable, affordable and sustainable energy solutions,” Brandi Davis-Handy, president of AES Indiana, said. “Hoosier Wind is an important contributor toward our portfolio evolution and our promise to deliver 100% clean energy to our customers by 2050.”

Hoosier Wind spans 6,500 acres of agricultural land and 53 wind turbines. At the time of its construction, it was the inaugural project for EDF Renewables. AES took operational responsibility effective Feb. 29, 2024.

For AES Indiana, the acquisition should offer customers a $22.2 million cost savings over the next six years. It also marks a step forward in the company’s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which seeks to add 1,300 MW of wind, solar and battery energy storage to help support its more than 500,000 customers over the next five years.
