Kentucky Power to file Demand-Side Management proposal to aid energy efficiency
Kentucky Power intends to file a Demand-Side Management (DSM) proposal with the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) on May 1 that will include new energy efficiency programs.
Those programs include a Home Energy Improvement Program and Commercial Energy Solutions Program. Both offer energy audits by professional contractors to qualified residential and commercial customers to identify ways to save money, while providing incentives for energy efficient upgrades. These will be coupled with an expansion of the Targeted Energy Efficiency program (TEE), to better support Community Action Agencies and reduce items that would otherwise prevent participation in either the TEE or Weatherization Assistance Program.
“Outdated heating and cooling equipment, as well as insufficient weatherization, can increase the energy burden and place additional pressure on economically vulnerable residential customers,” Barry Nolen, customer and distribution services manager for Kentucky Power, said. “Simply put, reducing electric usage can reduce a customer’s bill. We urge all customers to find ways to use electricity more efficiently and we know these programs will help.”
Kentucky Power added that these programs will offer more assistance to lower-income customers in particular, through a mix of energy and cost savings. If approved, their combined effect on the monthly bill of the average residential consumer would be 56 cents.
