In order to meet Michigan’s clean energy standards, which demand utilities go fully green in their energy production by 2040, Marquette – Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) recently announced collaborations and plans to help it meet that deadline.

First up, UPPCO pitched a collaboration with Enel X Advisory Services to help it craft a competitive and transparent Request for Proposal (RFP) process to guide its major shift for the regional energy landscape. Competition will be critical to this effort, and by tapping Enel, UPPCO has forged an alliance with a major developer of sustainable energy strategies.

“We recognize the vital role that clean energy plays in building a brighter, more sustainable future for the State of Michigan,” UPPCO CEO Gradon Haehnel said. “That’s why we’re committed to responsible decision-making that harnesses the power of renewable and clean energy resources as we chart our course for meeting the evolving needs of our customers and communities.”

While it has not opened for comment yet, the RFP will be supplemented by what UPPCO called customer engagement opportunities this fall, while its own staff focuses on the next version of its Integrated Resource Plan. If the company sticks to state requirements, it will also need to achieve an interim goal, wherein 60 percent of its energy mix is renewable by 2035.
