The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) released last week its City Energy Efficiency Scorecard, which ranks 51 large U.S. cities on their energy efficiency.

The report again ranked Boston the top city for energy efficiency, receiving 84.5 out of a possible 100 points, an improvement of 2.5 from its 2015 score. New York City ranked second and Seattle ranked third. Los Angeles, Portland, Austin, Chicago, Washington D.C., Denver and San Francisco rounded out the top ten.

Compared to ACEEE’s 2015 scorecard, Los Angeles was the most improved city. Its score jumped by 25 points earning a spot in the top five and top 10 for the first time. San Diego, Kansas City, and Phoenix are the second, third, and fourth most-improved cities, respectively.

The five cities most in need of improvement on energy efficiency are Hartford, Memphis, Detroit, Oklahoma City and Birmingham.

“Across the nation, cities are taking steps to save energy, and they are creating more economically vibrant and resilient communities in the process,” David Ribeiro, ACEEE senior researcher and the lead author on the report, said.

The five key areas covered in the study are local government operations, community-wide initiatives, building policies, energy and water utilities and transportation policies. This is the third edition of the City Energy Efficiency Scorecard.
