Appalachian Power to rebuild transmission line in Virginia

Appalachian Power recently announced plans to replace aging infrastructure and rebuild about seven miles of its 69-kilovolt (kV) transmission line in northern Dickenson County, Virginia in order to improve the reliability of its electric service.

The $15 million Haysi Transmission Line Rebuild Project will begin at the ridge of Pine Mountain just south of the Kentucky-Virginia border, travel through the Jefferson National Forest for about a mile and
end at a structure near Providence Drive north of Clinchco, Virginia.

“The company’s priority is to provide customers with reliable and affordable electric service,” Mary Begley, external affairs manager for Appalachian Power, said. “Rebuilding this line with sturdier, modern technology allows us to proactively put our transmission system in the best position to reduce the likelihood of extended power outages.”

Appalachian Power expects to begin work on the project in the spring of 2018 and complete it by mid-2019. The majority of the work will occur within or adjacent to existing right-of-way easements. Emerald Energy & Exploration, the company’s right-of-way vendor on the project, will contact affected landowners in the coming weeks about upcoming project activities.

The project is expected to bring Dickenson County additional estimated annual tax revenue of approximately $65,000.
