Con Edison CEO highlights enhanced safety, increased renewable and advanced technology deployment

Consolidated Edison, Inc. Chairman and CEO John McAvoy highlighted the company’s safety record, as well as its renewable energy and advanced technology initiatives, at the company’s annual meeting this week.

In 2016, the company achieved the lowest number of employee recordable injuries on record. McAvoy highlighted innovations such as vented and latched manhole covers that will improve public and employee safety.

He also discussed efforts to incorporate renewable resources, deploy of smart meters and introduce a new mobile resiliency transformer to enhance reliability.

“Our performance is strong,” McAvoy said. “We have solid plans for the future. We are optimistic and believe we have many opportunities. We will do what’s necessary to take that optimism and those opportunities and turn them into positive results.”

Con Edison is now the fifth largest solar company in North America, the CEO said. The Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses has invested $2.1 billion in solar and wind projects in the past two years. He also mentioned the company’s energy efficiency programs, which 320,000 residential and commercial customers have utilized since 2009.

McAvoy also highlighted the company’s participation in REV: Reforming the Energy Vision, a statewide program aimed at modernizing the energy system.

ConEdison also plans to improve its website and social media and introduce an app and mentioned new and proposed electric and gas transmission projects, McAvoy said.
