Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation, recently received the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) Emergency Assistance Award for its work in assisting Consumers Energy and DTE Energy following a severe winter storm in Michigan earlier this year.

“On behalf of everyone at IPL, we are honored to be recognized for EEI’s Emergency Assistance Award,” AES US Vice President of Customer Operations Joe Bentley said. “We take great pride in serving our customers in Indianapolis and helping our neighboring electric companies in times of need.”

This award is presented twice each year to EEI member companies that assisted nearby electric company in power restoration efforts a service disruption caused by severe weather conditions or other natural events. Following an international nomination process, a panel of judges chose the winners, and the awards were presented at EEI’s Annual Convention in Boston.

In early March, winter storms caused a large number of service interruptions in southeast Michigan. IPL spent nearly 2,000 hours over the course of eight days to restore service to 256,000 Consumers Energy customers and 600,000 DTE customers affected by the storm.

“IPL crews quickly responded to the call to assist in the restoration efforts following March severe storms,” EEI President Tom Kuhn said. “Mutual assistance is a hallmark of the electric power industry and IPL crews exemplify the industry’s dedication to mutual assistance and customer service. The courageous and dedicated crews who faced challenging and hazardous conditions are greatly deserving of this recognition.”
