The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) recently named National Grid, which provides electric service to more than 1.3 million customers in Massachusetts, one of the most energy efficient utilities in the United States.
ACEEE’s first Utility Energy Efficiency Scorecard ranks the country’s 51 largest U.S. electric utilities on energy efficiency programs and policies, including energy efficiency program performance, program
diversity and emerging areas and energy efficiency- related regulatory issues.
“National Grid is proud to serve communities and customers who are the true leaders in energy efficiency. Without them, this tremendous achievement would not be possible,” Marcy Reed, president of National
Grid Massachusetts, said. “We are honored by this recognition and committed to providing our customers options to obtain affordable and sustainable energy.”
ACEEE awarded National Grid 45.5 out of 50 possible points across all categories, including a perfect score for utilizing tools approved by state and federal regulators to establish energy efficiency programs and a near-perfect score for program performance.
The utility provides programs that offer economic incentives for peak demand reductions, incentives for smart thermostats and heat pump water heaters as well as other initiatives. The company also recently partnered with the city of Boston on a number of energy efficiency programs.
