Senate reconfirms Svinicki as Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman

The U.S. Senate recently confirmed the renomination of Kristine Svinicki as chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in an 88 to 9 vote – one day before the June 30 expiration of Svinicki’s term.

The nomination preserves a quorum at the NRC, which enables the agency to complete its responsibilities to their full extent.

“NEI congratulates Chairman Svinicki on her renomination. Special thanks is due to Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and EPW Chairman Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) and ranking member Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) for their quick work to maintain a quorum in the NRC,” Maria Korsnick, NEI’s president and CEO, said.

Svinicki new five-year term will expire in 2022. President Trump appointed her as chair of the NRC in January 2017. She has served as a commissioner since 2008. Prior to joining the NRC, Svinicki worked as a staff member in the Senate for more than 10 years.

David Wright and Annie Caputo have been appointed and currently await confirmation to fill commissioner seats and provide the NRC with a full board of commissioners.

“We look forward to the timely confirmation of David Wright and Annie Caputo so that the NRC will have a full slate of commissioners,” Korsnick said.
