ExxonMobil, Eagle LNG Partners LLC and Crowley recently signed an agreement to cooperate on the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.

The companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding and plan to establish storage and technical support to provide LNG delivery for vessel operators bunkering in North America.

The project will initially focus its efforts in Florida and then expand to other North American markets.

ExxxonMobile will provide technical support and expertise related to bunkering operations and the sale of LNG bunker fuel to vessel operators. Eagle LNG Partners will supply the LNG and design, build and operate small-scale production and storage facilities. Eagle LNG Partners will also manage land-based LNG transport. Crowley will provide bunker logistics and ensure safe and reliable operations.

“The Memorandum of Understanding is another major step forward in developing LNG as a marine fuel. It will leverage the specialist knowledge and expertise of ExxonMobil, Eagle LNG Partners and Crowley to the benefit of vessel operators bunkering in North America,” Luca Volta, LNG venture manager at ExxonMobil, said. “This agreement provides additional opportunities for vessel operators looking to adopt LNG as a marine fuel.”

The International Maritime Organization introduction of a global 0.50 percent sulfur cap on vessel emissions in 2020 will impact bunker fuel selection and has potentially opened up the marine fuel market for low-sulfur options such as LNG.
