The Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) recently issued a request for applications for disbursements from the state’s regional greenhouse gas initiative (RGGI).

According to the MPUC, the request was issued in accordance with a bill that reduces electric rates for
Maine businesses and another that establishes energy policy in the state. The legislation requires that the MPUC direct a total of $2.5 million in funding for FY2017-2018 to specified manufacturing customers in Maine.

For the previous fiscal year, the commission issued disbursements to 16 energy-intensive manufacturers located throughout the state, ranging from $7,500 on the low end to a high of $365,000, which totaled $3.0 million.

“The Commission looks forward to broad participation by customers in this application process,” MPUC Chairman Mark Vannoy said.

MPUC said in a release it expects to make a decision on the applications and disbursement amounts for the current fiscal year in September.

Maine’s Public Utilities Commission is the regulator of electric, telephone, water, and gas utilities throughout the state. It also operates the state’s enhanced 911 service and Dig Safe, which helps notify participating utilities companies of state resident’s plan to dig for home improvement projects in order to safely locate underground utility infrastructure.
