The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated that Wyoming, Texas, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and North Dakota were the nation’s top net energy suppliers in 2015 in its recently released State Energy Data System.

Twelve states produced more energy than they consumed, according to the report, while 28 states and the District of Columbia were net recipients of energy.

California, Florida, and New York were top net energy recipients. These states have large populations and limited energy production.

Wyoming has the smallest population of any state and ranked 42 out of 51 for energy consumption.
Wyoming produces the most coal of any state and provided over 40 percent of the nation’s coal in 2015. It also produces the sixth most natural gas of any state.

Texas both consumes and produces the most energy of any state but produces 41 percent more than it consumes. Texas produces the most crude oil, natural gas and wind of any state. It supplies more than one-third of U.S. crude oil production, nearly one-third of natural gas production and more than one-fourth of wind-powered electricity generation.

The recent growth of the natural gas industry in Pennsylvania and West Virginia due to the development of resources in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays. Pennsylvania is among the top five coal-producing states. West Virginia is the second largest coal-producing state.

Between 2006 and 2016, North Dakota’s crude oil production increased from 108,000 barrels per day (b/d) to more than one million b/d primarily because of the continued development of the Bakken shale formation.
