Northwestern Energy on Tuesday began work on an $80,000 upgrade project to the electric system in Ennis and Madison Valley, Montana.

The project involves rebuilding a substation near the fairground in Ennis and upgrading a substation north of Ennis. The upgrades are intended to increase the reliability of service for customers in the area and reduce the number and duration of outages caused by storms and other events. They will allow workers to remotely restore power in some areas.

Tuesday’s work required a power outage for the about 3,100 customers in the Ennis and Madison Valley communities between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The upgrade work will require a second outage in October. Northwestern Energy will determine the exact timing of the second outage as the project progresses.
