EIA adds Anadarko region, consolidates Marcellus and Utica regions in Drilling Productivity Report

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently updated its Drilling Productivity Report (DPR) by adding the Anadarko region in Oklahoma and Texas and consolidating the Marcellus and Utica region
into one known as Appalachia.

The Anadarko region has long produced hydrocarbons but saw an increase in production recently mostly from the STACK (Sooner Trend Anadarko Canadian and Kingfisher) and the SCOOP (South Central Oklahoma Oil Province) plays. The Meramec, Osage, and Woodford formation account for most of the region’s production.

The addition of Anadarko to the DPR brings the percentage of active onshore rigs covered in the report from 73 to 87 percent. The 129 active rigs in the Anadarko region brings the total number of included rigs to 809 of the nation’s 928.

The Anadarko region produces approximately 450,000 barrels of oil per day and 5.7 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas. It includes 13 percent of new wells drilled and 13 percent of drilled but uncompleted wells as of July 2017.

The formations of the Appalachian basin that make up the Marcellus and Utica plays overlap at some points, making it difficult to attribute production to the correct formation, especially with this increased production of recent years. This prompted EIA to combine the Marcellus and Utica regions to form the Appalachia region.
