The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced $50 million in funding through the Office of Fossil Energy for two large-scale pilot projects for improving coal technologies.

Projects should have already demonstrated small-scale success at a small-scale pilot stage. A minimum 20 percent share of total award values is required.

The funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will consist of three phases, each of which will include
down-selections. Phase one will determine feasibility, phase two will involve project design and phase three will be the construction and operation of the two final projects.

The projects can be designed to improve coal-powered systems’ performance and efficiency, reduce emissions and cost of electricity or include other improvements to current coal technologies.
