Georgia Power restores power to 95 percent of customers affected by Hurricane Irma

Georgia Power recently announced that it restored power to more than 95 percent of – or more than 960,000 – customers who were impacted by Hurricane Irma in four days.

Approximately 40,000 still do not have power.

The company mobilized more than 8,000 personnel as part of its restoration efforts, including Georgia Power employees and crews from other companies and utilities.

“Our job is not finished until every customer is reconnected and we want to thank the millions of customers who depend on us for electric service every day for their patience during restoration,” Paul Bowers, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power, said. “I also want to personally thank our sister operating companies, as well as all utility, public safety and governmental partners who worked together over the past weeks to prepare for and recover from Hurricane Irma.”

Georgia Power estimates that the hurricane may have damaged 1,500 power poles, more than 230 miles of wire, approximately 450 transformers and caused 2,400 trees to fall.

“The destruction from Hurricane Irma was unprecedented across Georgia, and throughout the Southeast, and I’m extremely proud of and thankful for the work and dedication of our teams to restore service to nearly all impacted customers ahead of schedule,” Bowers said.
