Williams Partners L.P. announced this week that it placed an expansion of its Transco pipeline system into service to increase natural gas delivery capacity to New York City by 115,000 dekatherms per day.

“Our Transco pipeline has a long history of providing New York City with safe, reliable natural gas service,” Micheal Dunn, Williams’ executive vice president and chief operating officer, said. “Our New York Bay Expansion project continues that long-standing commitment, providing additional supplies of affordable natural gas to support the region’s economic vitality and ensure a reliable energy supply to the New York City area.”

The New York Bay Expansion delivers additional firm transportation capacity for incremental natural gas supplies to natural gas distributor National Grid. The project included horsepower additions at three existing Transco compressor facilities, as well as changes to existing meter and regulator stations in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

“As we have seen with the recent storms that have devastated other states and neighboring regions, the security of energy supply needs to be protected and enhanced,” Ken Daly, president of National Grid New York, said. “A secure and resilient supply of natural gas is critical to the local New York City and Long Island communities we serve. Williams’ New York Bay Expansion project will help ensure safe, reliable and secure energy to meet our customers’ needs.”

The completion of the New York Bay Expansion makes the fourth of five Williams Partners’ fully contracted Transco expansion projects expected to enter service this year, for a combined capacity increase of 2.5 million dekatherms per day to the Transco pipeline system in 2017 so far. The partnership is aiming for a fourth-quarter 2017 in-service date for the fifth planned Transco expansion, the Virginia Southside II project.
