Appalachian Power announces proposed route for West Virginia transmission grid improvement project

Appalachian Power and its affiliate, AEP West Virginia Transmission Company, recently announced a proposed route for a Boone County, West Virginia, area improvements project.

The proposed route was chosen by incorporating public data gathered at open houses held between Fall 2016 and Spring 2017, according to the company.

The two-phase, $100 million project specifically includes rebuilding approximately 35 miles of existing transmission lines, the construction of a new substation, relocating an existing substation, and upgrades to a number of substations along the proposed route.

Appalachian Power said the investment will strengthen the transmission grid in Boone and Kanawha Counties by replacing aging infrastructure with new technology. It will also ensure continued electric reliability to customers while meeting the region’s increase in power demand.

Phase 1 construction is expected to begin in summer 2018 and be completed by the end of 2019. Phase 2 construction is expected to start in late 2018 and will run for approximately two years. The company said its right-of-way representatives from O.R. Colan will soon begin contacting affected property owners to discuss upcoming activities.
