Secretary of Energy Rick Perry and Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) President and CEO Maria Korsnick met with a group of 13 young nuclear industry leaders at U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) headquarters in Washington, D.C., as part of Nuclear Science Week.

Perry highlighted nuclear’s national security and environmental benefits and asked the group to identify three achievable and substantive “action items” to promote the cause of preserving existing nuclear generation.

“Each and every one of us in the nuclear industry should be excited about our energy secretary’s commitment to seeing nuclear technology thrive,” Kory Raftery of Arizona Public Service Co., who participated in the meeting, said. “There was passion in every facet of the issues he raised with us, and we’re excited to partner with him to ‘make nuclear cool again’ and act on the tasks he gave us.”

Nuclear Science Week will also include the first-ever Millennial Nuclear Caucus, co-sponsored by DOE and NEI, at which Washington energy policymakers will join more than 50 young nuclear industry professionals.

“Secretary Perry has already proven himself a committed champion of clean and resilient nuclear energy as a core contributor to America’s energy mix,” Korsnick said. “His outreach to standout young professionals during Nuclear Science Week demonstrates his enthusiasm for reinforcing U.S. leadership in nuclear energy as well as building a launch pad for the future.”
