Illinois State Senate confirms the state’s first Latina commissioner

The Illinois Senate voted unanimously this week to confirm Gov. Bruce Rauner’s appointment of Sadzi Martha Oliva to the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC), making her the first Latina member of the ICC.

“I would like to thank Governor Rauner, Chairman Muñoz, and the Illinois Senate for their confidence in me. It is a tremendous honor,” Oliva said. “I am humbled to play a part in the state’s leading role in setting energy policy.”

Oliva is also a member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Committee on Critical Infrastructure as well as the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Advisory Council and serves as Illinois’ representative on the Organization of MISO States (OMS) Board of Directors. She is also a member of the Cuban-American Chamber of Commerce of Illinois and earned a JD from Loyola University School of Law and a BA from DePaul University.

“I am extremely proud of Governor Rauner’s leadership in assembling one of the most diverse and outstanding public utility commissions in the United States,” ICC Chairman Brien J. Sheahan said.
