Petra Nova
Capping off a year of operations southwest of Houston, Texas, the “clean” coal power plant known as Petra Nova has been honored by POWER magazine as plant of the year.
Petra Nova began operations in January this year, bringing to bear the nation’s largest post-combustion carbon capture project installed on a coal plant. Since then, it has been operating as hoped, putting it on course to capture 1.6 million tons of carbon per year through a carbon dioxide recovery process.
“While the Petra Nova project will certainly benefit Texas, it also demonstrates that clean coal technologies can have a meaningful and positive impact on the nation’s energy security and economic growth,” Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said at its opening.
The project was made possible through a joint venture between NRG Energy Inc. and JX Nippon Oil and Gas Exploration Corporation, with financial assistance from the Department of Energy and the National Energy Technology Lab.
