Alaska lawmakers applauded a joint development agreement announced on Thursday that will advance energy development on Alaska’s North Slope that would deliver an average of 3.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, primarily for international markets.

The joint development agreement for the Alaska LNG project was reached by Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, the Alaska Gasline Development Corp., China Petroleum & Chemical Corp. (Sinopec), CIC Capital Corp., and the Bank of China.

U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), the chairwoman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and U.S. Rep. Don Young (R-AK) applauded the agreement and emphasized the significance of the Alaska LNG project.

“We congratulate Gov. Walker and all who are working on the Alaska LNG project on this milestone,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement. “We also thank President Trump for his strong support of the project and efforts to reduce our trade deficit with China, which is Alaska’s largest trading partner.”

Walker signed the agreement in Beijing in a ceremony attended by President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“The responsible development of Alaska’s natural resources offers a great opportunity to create good jobs and new wealth in our state and across the country, while paying down both state and federal deficits, improving our balance of trade and strengthening our national security,” Murkowski and Young wrote. “We look forward to learning more about this announcement and are ready to work with all stakeholders to advance the Alaska LNG project.”
