The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) Nominating Council recently announced that it is seeking applicants for a five-year term as a PUCO commissioner that begins on April 11, 2018.

The PUCO, which regulates Ohio’s investor-owned public utilities, consists of five commissioners appointed to rotating, five-year terms by the governor. The PUCO Nominating Council is a 12-member panel that screens candidates positions as PUCO commissioner.

After reviewing all applications, the Nominating Council will narrow down the candidates to a list of the most qualified for the position. On Jan. 25, 2018, the Nominating Council will interview the selected applicants and recommend four finalists to Gov. John R. Kasich. Within 30 days, the governor will either appoint a commissioner from the list or request a new list from the Nominating Council. The Ohio Senate must confirm the governor’s appointment.

To qualify, candidates must be a resident of Ohio and have at least three years’ experience in economics, law, finance, accounting, engineering, physical or natural sciences, natural resources or environmental studies. Commissioners may not be an employee of or hold stocks or bonds of a public utility subject to regulation by the Public Utilities Commission

The Nominating Council will accept applications until 5 p.m. EST on Jan. 11, 2018.
