PUCT approves advanced metering system for Entergy Texas
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) recently voted to approve a proposal by Entergy Texas, Inc. to install an advanced metering system as part of its broader grid modernization efforts.
“The PUCT’s approval will allow us to move forward with a landmark investment in new technology that will improve how we serve our customers,” Sallie Rainer, Entergy Texas president and CEO, said. “This system will lay the foundation for grid modernization technologies that offer a wide range of benefits to our customers.”
Entergy Texas will begin to build and deploy the technology and communications infrastructure in January 2018, and then install the meters. The company expects to complete the installation by 2021. Customers will see a charge for the project on their bill starting in January.
Entergy said the advanced meters will provide customers with more detailed and timely information on their energy usage. The company will also be able to identify outages remotely and access meter information help with customers’ billing and service questions.
Utilities in Texas have already deployed approximately 7 million meters throughout the state.
