Indiana Michigan Power to begin annual winter drawdown of Elkhart reservoir

Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) began this week the annual drawdown of the St. Joseph River, upstream of the Elkhart Hydroelectric Generating Station to help reduce ice buildup and flooding upstream of the dam.

I&M will lower the water level by two feet total at a rate of approximately six inches per day. The utility will return the water to its normal operating level of 741.5 feet above sea level in early spring.

The Elkhart hydroelectric facility, which has a capacity of 3.44 megawatts, is one of six run-of-river hydroelectric plants that I&M operates on the St. Joseph River.

I&M operates the Elkhart Hydroelectric Generating Station and conducts the drawdown in accordance with its license issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
