The New York Public Service Commission approved a new measure on Monday that will boost the state’s clean energy production to 50 percent by 2030.

The new Clean Energy Standard will see the third-largest state economy in the U.S. incrementally increase the diversity of New York’s electricity by requiring suppliers to source 26 percent of their electricity mix in 2017 with renewable sources such as wind and solar power, 30 percent by 2021, and 50 percent by 2030.

“We applaud New York for its bold leadership by targeting 50 percent renewable energy within the next 15 years,” Tom Kiernan, CEO of the American Wind Energy Association, said. “By diversifying the state’s electricity mix with zero-emission renewable electricity like wind power, New Yorkers will soon be able to breathe a little easier. The state’s economy also wins thanks to the billions of dollars in private investment needed to help grow new land-based and offshore wind farms in the state. The environmental and economic benefits made possible by this new policy is a win-win for New York.”

The new measure is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a 40 percent reduction by 2030, and to keep electricity rates low for residential customers.
