The Energy and Commerce (E&C) Committee’s Subcommittees on Energy and Power and the Environment and the Economy recently scheduled a hearing to discuss the 2017 fiscal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) budget and Project Aim 2020 regulations.

The subcommittees oversee the NRC. The hearing, titled “Fiscal Year 2017 Nuclear Regulatory Commission Budget,” will allow subcommittee officials to ensure that the NRC is serving in the best way possible to fulfill its obligations and objectives.

“The mission of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission remains vital to the stability of the entire energy sector and the safety and security of millions of people who depend on its consistent and reliable actions,” Subcommittee Chairmen Reps. Ed Whitfield (R-KY) and John Shimkus (R-IL) said. “The subcommittees are committed to ensuring that the commission lives up to its reputation as an independent, credible safety regulator. We look forward to a productive dialogue on the commission’s ongoing efforts to right-size the agency and become more efficient. An NRC best prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century is critical to fulfilling our nuclear future.”

The hearing will also include an examination and discussion of the NRC’s long term budgetary and staffing needs as outlined by Project Aim 2020.
